To spread awareness of AAPSU’s data disaggregation initiative to students, community members and leaders, and other MCPS stakeholders.

Discuss Mental Health in the Asian Community

 

Many Asian Americans suffer from mental health issues. However, there is a stigma when it comes to accessing mental health resources/services. We can talk about these issues during the event.

Introductory Meeting with Ms. Singhal

 

• Get students and parents to pressure principals and Social Studies resource teachers to offer a Asian studies course at more schools - take a school by school approach 

  • Target schools w/ high Asian populations

• BCC, Blair, WJ → have an East Asian Studies course that feels very fetishizing

  • Find out what’s being taught, who the audience is

  • Try and convince teachers to expand it to APIDA as a whole

  • Education and awareness

• Find teachers at each school who wants to teach the course, train them, continue teaching

• Generate interest in the course to keep going

• APIDA course was vetted by Central Office staff and approved by the BOE

• Determine which schools to focus on 

  • 3 schools with East Asian studies

  • Springbrook

Introductory Meeting with MocoPAAN

 

• Started around boundary analysis controversy specifically from conservative Asian Americans and discrimination against Asian Americans

• Criteria: support for boundary analysis, race-conscious admissions, affirmative action, rights for all immigrants, Maryland-specific

• MoCoPAAN got a grant from AAAJ for anti-discrimination, INCLUDING ETHNIC STUDIES

• Month-long Asian American studies program, Yuri Kochiyama Program

• Recognize the importance of data disaggregation in the Asian American community

• Hear from various figures that specialize in data disaggregation 

• Learn about data disaggregation legislation and policies

• Expand our understanding of what data disaggregation is by participating in a panel discussion and Q&A
